Sadness in Honduras

  • In Honduras, 50,000 children under the age of five die every year from the effects of drinking impure water.

  • Barely half of the population has access to disinfected water.

  • 80% of the illnesses detected in Honduras originate from the contaminated water they consume.

  • Over 66% of families in rural Honduras live in extreme poverty, under $1 per person a day.

  • 26% of the people are without access to sanitation.

  • Many families in rural Honduras are unable to afford to send their children to school. Average adult level of education is 4.6 years. For those children who are fortunate enough to attend school, 20 to 25% are absent due to intestinal illness or caring for the needs of other family members afflicted. A child cannot learn if he or she is not in school , and no child's mind develops without proper nutrition, starting with the most basic need, Pure Water.

  • Hondurans who live in the rural areas sometimes walk 5-10 miles to find drinking water. The water they bring home is from a river, stream, or lake and is contaminated.
